Email Conversion FAQ PDF Print E-mail

Q. Will email be unavailable at any time during the conversion?

A. The switch to the new email system will be immediate, and you will be able to download new messages before and after the actual cut over time. However, any mail that was on the old server at the time of the cut-over must be moved to the new system once the conversion is completed. This means that some number of older messages sent to you before the conversion will be delivered later than messages sent to you after the conversion.

Q. I use an email client (like Outlook). Will I need to change my email settings?

A. No, you will send and receive email just as you did before. There is no change to the email settings.

Q. Is there any difference in how I would change my email password or email address?

A. No. You will still change your password or email address in the Customer Control Panel. However, there may be a delay of up to five minutes before the change will go into effect.

Q. Will the address for Webmail change?

A. No, you will still go to the same address for Webmail. After the conversion, that address will bring you to the login screen for a new Webmail application.

Q. How will the new Webmail look?

A. Click here to view sample screens from the Webmail application.

Q. Will my Webmail Address Book and Calendar be as it was before?

A. We will move Address Books and Calendar entries, however, the underlying data fields in the new system are not exactly the same as the older system. Because of this, the basic contact data in the Address Book will be moved, and we will move single occurrences of calendar entries, although not recurring entries.

Q. Will there be changes to emScan Spam and Virus Filtering?

A. Yes. There will no longer be a separate emScan Message Center that you will use to control filter settings and view quarantined messages. The new filtering engine will block spam and viruses, and the default (recommended) setting does not send spam into quarantine. You have the ability to choose to quarantine spam in a spam folder within Webmail, but that is not recommended.

By allowing the server to reject obvious spam sent to your address, you help reduce further spam sent to you because spammers will not see a message that was successfully delivered. Also, you do not need to worry about quarantined spam taking up a portion of your email storage. If you do choose to send spam into quarantine, messages in that folder are deleted after two weeks.

Q. Will my Approved and Blocked Senders be moved to the new system?

A. The new emScan filtering system relies less on content filtering, and more on the actual source of the spam, so there is less need for adding approved senders. You will still have the ability to add approved senders if needed (called Whitelists in the new system), but we will not be moving your current approved senders into the new filtering system. Blocked senders are of little value for blocking actual spam. You will still have the ability to add blocked senders if needed (called Blacklists in the new system), but we will not move your current blocked senders list to the new system.

Q. If I decide to use the quarantine option, and send spam to the spam folder, will I get a quarantine summary or a notification when a virus is sent to me?

A. No, the new system does not send a summary of quarantined email. If you use the quarantine option, you can check your spam folder within Webmail at any time to see any quarantined messages. Viruses will always be blocked, and will not be placed in quarantine even if you are using the spam folder. No notification is sent if a virus is blocked.

Q. If I choose the option to send spam to quarantine, will spam sent to my other email addresses under my main account be directed to my main Spam folder?

A. No, each mailbox under your account will have its own login and password to Webmail and its own Spam folder.

Q. Will I be able to check messages in my old emScan Message Center?

A. Yes, you will be able to check for messages that were quarantined prior to the conversion until the end of the month. To check your old quarantine box, go to http://emscan.24hoursupport.com.
